Does my child/teenager need to know why they feel the way they do?
Why do they need 12 consecutive weekly one-to-one sessions?
Absolutely not! Drawing and Talking/Sand Play doesn’t aim to uncover the 'why' or to solve problems. Its goal is to promote a compassionate, non-judgemental exploration of all emotions through play and imagination. In doing so, emotions they are holding internally can be processed in a safe, non-confrontational way.
Do they need to be artistic?
No - simply to have a willingness to put pencil to paper. No artistic skills are needed.
Will they need time off school?
Appointments are available in school at the end of the school day, and after school in the private Community Room at The Walled Garden in Little Plumstead.
When your child/teenager is seen during school hours, whenever possible, I will arrange appointments during assembly or non-core subject lessons.
12 weeks is an optimal duration because it allows your child/teenager to grow in confidence. This allows them to share their thoughts, opinions, and their imagination unfolds without criticism or judgement.
Can they have more than one session per week?
One session per week gives your child/teenager the opportunity to process whatever they’ve explored during their session. Anything more could feel overwhelming and therefore be counterproductive.
What if my child/teenager needs to miss a session due to illness or holiday?
Please email to let me know if your child/teenager needs to miss a session (giving at least 48 hours notice). Up to two missed sessions may be added to their 12 week block of sessions.
My child/teenager is on a waiting list for specialist support. Can they have sessions with Drawing Comfort while we wait?
Yes, Drawing and Talking/Sand Play can be used while on a waiting list.
It mustn't be used to replace or to run alongside specialist support that your child/teenager is already receiving (such as Psychotherapy, Art or Play Therapy).
Do we need to wait a specific amount of time after an emotional event, such as a bereavement, before the Drawing Comfort sessions can start?
There's no need to wait. Sessions can start as soon as you and your child/teenager are ready to receive support.
